CHAPTER FIVE

A resounding boom and crack startled Gage awake. He jumped and bolted upright. Collin flinched and instantly reached for Gage. As he wrapped an arm around him, Gage settled slightly, but his heart still galloped in his chest. He had no idea what the sound was. Lightning and thunder? More of the barn falling? Another tree going down?

He shook off the last of his sleep and listened. No other loud noises came, but he could still hear the hurricane roaring outside. He glanced down at his watch. They’d slept for about an hour and it didn’t sound as though the hurricane had lessened, but he knew it wouldn’t for a long time yet.

Collin rubbed his hand up Gage’s back. “You okay?”

Gage nodded. “Yeah. Whatever the hell that was startled me, that’s all. You?”

“Same.” Collin leaned forward, nuzzling into Gage’s neck and giving him a light bite on the shoulder. “And I’m feeling a little horny again, too.”

Gage grinned at him. “I’m feeling that too now that I know the roof isn’t coming down on us.” He looked toward the window and the arena. “I should go out and check on Shaman and his family, and check on the horses in the other barn.”

Collin sat up straighter. “You can’t go out in this. It’s too dangerous.”

Gage climbed off the couch and went to his clothes. “I’ll just look out the front of the barn to the other one and make sure all looks okay with it.”

Collin contemplated him for a long moment, then relented with a sigh. Without another word, he stood and picked up his clothes, showing he was going with him.

Gage smiled to himself and wrestled into his clothes. He snatched his cowboy hat off a chair and shoved it down on his head, walking toward the door.

Collin followed after him. “I can’t believe you don’t have a raincoat.”

“I’m from the desert. I’ve never owned a raincoat in my life.”

“Uh huh. Or, you were so focused on getting things ready for the horses, you forgot that little detail for yourself.”

Gage stopped at the door and turned back to him. “And where’s your raincoat? You know, since you’re the native ‘round here and so prepared for this storm.”

Collin’s voice dropped to a grumble. “It’s in my truck.”

Gage felt a smirk pulling at his lips. “Good place for it.”

Collin gave him a light shove for the comment, only making Gage snicker.

They left the office and stepped into the arena. Shaman walked toward them and Gage turned to greet the stallion. As Shaman stopped in front of him, Gage moved to his side and rubbed the horse’s neck. “You seem to be doing good.” He peeked over Shaman’s back to the mares and foals. “And so does your family.”

Having grabbed a flashlight before leaving the office, Collin flicked it on and shone the beam toward the rafters high above. He walked slowly, his head tipped back as he scanned the ceiling. “Everything’s still looking solid. This building’s holding up damn good.”

Gage patted Shaman’s shoulder and started walking toward the barn.
